Changes to Hoopla

To Brown County Library’s Hoopla users:

After careful consideration, it is necessary for Brown County Library to enact some changes to Hoopla service effective February 15, 2025.

Hoopla monthly checkout limits: The monthly instant download checkout limit at hoopla Digital will be reduced from 6 to 4 items starting on February 15, 2025.

Hoopla out-of-county resident use service ending: As of February 15, 2025, Hoopla will no longer be available to borrowers with primary residences outside of Brown County.

Why is Brown County Library making these changes? Although Hoopla is free service for patrons to use, Hoopla operates on a cost-per-circulation model. This means that there is cost to the library for each item checked out on Hoopla. Therefore, the cost increases as the number of checkouts increase. eAudiobooks tend to be the most expensive category as well as the most popular with patrons, so those costs can rise quickly. Current use has rendered this model unsustainable for Brown County Library due to budget limitations. To continue to make the service sustainable for the taxpaying residents of Brown County within the confines of the library’s budget, we’ve had to set the new limits described above.

I’m a Hoopla user who resides outside of Brown County – what do I need to do? Prior to February 15, 2025 if you want a list of the titles you’ve checked out through Hoopla or that you have on your favorites/wishlist, you’ll need to either write down the titles or take a screenshot of the items in your Hoopla history. Because of Wisconsin library privacy laws, Brown County Library does not have access to this information. Find your checkout history by going to the Hoopla app; select “My hoopla”; select “Complete History”; write down or take a screenshot of the titles. Please note: Use of other Brown County Library digital services such as Libby, Boundless, and Press Reader will continue to function for out-of-county users. Be sure to check with the library in your residential area for other services that may be available to you as a resident of your community.
